“A few days back, Due to a virus attack, I cleaned up my laptop and again rebuilt with Windows 10 Pro. After that, I reinstalled the Outlook 365 email application and trying to reconfigure the email accounts. But when I started to configure the Gmail profile, suddenly a message will pop-out that notify Outlook to disapprove any set up with a Gmail account with IMAP. Although, I entered the right credentials during the configuration. So, I want to know that how should I fix Outlook not connecting to Gmail problem. If anyone has any suggestion, please kindly let me know.”

On July 15, 2014, Google has improved its security features to obstruct unauthorized access to Gmail accounts. With this update, Google mail did not allow the basic authentication, as a result,  Outlook cannot connect to Gmail after July 15, 2014. Hence, when users add a Google account in MS Outlook, and, basic authentication has not been enabled for the Gmail profile. Then, a message will pop-out and it looks like this:

How to Connect Gmail Account In Outlook


When users try to sync Gmail account with Outlook after July 15, 2014, they receive an error message in Outlook. Moreover, if users are using Outlook 2016 running on the Mac platform, then the error message will look different. Although, the methods to fix this Outlook cannot connect to Gmail after July 2014 error remain same for the Windows as well as Mac machine. This problem can be resolved by following solutions that are listed below:

1. Set-up Gmail account with IMAP
2. Allow less secure Apps in Gmail

Solution #1: Set-Up Gmail Account With IMAP


Sometimes, while configuring Gmail account in the Outlook environment, users may provide the incorrect information. And, it will prompt users for the authentication.  To sort out this issue, follow the steps that are shown below:

1. Open your browser and log in to the Gmail account by entering the username and password. Click Next.



2. Click on Settings >> Forwarding and POP/IMAP. Now, change the status of IMAP from Disable to Enable IMAP.



3. Now, close the browser and open Outlook program in your system. Select the File tab >> Info. From the Account Information page, click on Add Account.



4. Select the E-mail Account option that will automatically configure the Gmail account in your Outlook account. Users only need to provide a Name, email address, and password for setting up the Google account.



5. If you are still not able to set up Gmail account, then select Manual setup option from the Add Account dialog box. Click Next.



6. It will redirect to a new screen named as Choose Service. Here, three different options are available to connect like Microsoft Exchange Server, Outlook.com, and POP or IMAP. Select the third option i.e. POP or IMAP and click Next.



7. In POP and IMAP Account Settings, provide your User Information. Also, mention the below details:

Account Type: IMAP
Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com
Outgoing mail server: smtp.gmail.com



Once you provide the appropriate details in the following corresponding box, click on More Settings.

8. Now, click on Outgoing Server, select the checkbox corresponding to “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication”. Also, choose the “Use same settings as my incoming mail server” and Click OK.



9. After that, click on Advanced and check the details. The incoming server should have 993 or 143 port number. In a similar manner, an Outgoing server should have 25 or 465 port number. Moreover, the encrypted connection for IMAP and SMTP should be SSL and TLS respectively. After that, click OK.



10. Now, you are able to set-up the Google account. Click on Finish. This is an important and mandatory step to resolve “Outlook cannot connect to Gmail” error.



11. Verify the Gmail account is configured properly or not through Microsoft Outlook application.



Solution #2: Allow Less Secure Apps in Gmail

This method is applicable to Outlook 2016/2010/2013/2007, Outlook 2016 for Mac, Outlook for Mac for Office 365, and Outlook for Mac 2011. Let’s explore the solution in detail:

1. Initially, Login to your Gmail profile with the help of a browser.

2. Click on My Account, it will redirect to a new page.

3. After that, click on Your personal info under the Personal info & Privacy option.



4. Go to Apps with account access, “ON” the switch button of Allow less secure apps as shown in the screenshot.


Now, again configure the Gmail account in Outlook environment. At this time, no error message will generate and smoothly Gmail profile will set-up in Microsoft Outlook.
